Water supply, sanitation to be top priorities, says first woman corpn commissioner
The post was vacant for more than 45 days, ever since her predecessor
TK Ponnusamy was ordered to step down from the post on January 11.
Ponnusamy, who was awaiting posting orders, has been appointed as the
Director of Economics and Statistics by the state government.
“Water distribution and sanitation will be the top priorities of the
city municipal corporation. I will be studying the relevant files and
checking on the status of ongoing projects, apart from understanding the
functioning of the corporation in the next few days,” said G Latha.
Prior to her appointment as the city corporation commissioner, Latha served as the General Manager of Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women. A native of Kancheepuram, Latha has also served as the General Manager of TANSIDCO
from 2009 to 2011. She has worked in various capacities during her
tenure including DRO Elections, District Supply Officer and Revenue
Divisional Officer in Thiruvalluvar district.
“Coimbatore is a
nice city and I have been here on numerous occasions. But now I will
have to look at the city from a different perspective,” Latha said.
The guard of change in the civic body has been made at a crucial
juncture as the corporation budget is expected to be presented in the
second week of March. The civic body is expected to focus on the
development of the newly added areas in its new budget. Some major
projects announced in the previous budget have been stalled in the
initial stage of execution, including the proposed multilevel car
parking facilities, 24X7 water supply and construction of weekly
markets. The proposed integrated bus stand project is another one yet to
be implemented.
