‘Will make officials more responsible’
Lakshmikant Reddy, chairman of the committee, told Express that they would ensure that the staff of the organisation worked efficiently and that the Palike had sufficient staff. He said the committee would carry out surprise inspections and punish those who were found to be negligent toward their work.
Reddy said the officials had become complacent and were turning away the public. He said this attitude would not be tolerated. He said if any officer was found guilty of not heeding the public’s complaint, he would face action. He noted that many officials had become arrogant.
“Since there were no elected representatives, the public did not know whom to complain to. But now they can come up to us”, he said, noting that there were more than one crore people in the city.
The chairman of the standing committee said he would hold meetings with concerned departments about improving the efficiency of the officials and their sensitivity towards public and their issues. He added that the committee would visit all the eight zonal offices and would check if the officials were performing their duties and being helpful to the public.
Considering the scope of their responsibility – the size of the city corporation limits and the number of wards in it, the number of people it caters to – the committee faces an enormous task. It has the quintessential role to make the administration affairs of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike as smooth and hasslefree as possible.
