Yeddyurappa announces a slew of grants for Madikeri

Madikeri: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa promised “moon” for the people of Kodagu district during his visit here on Monday. He laid foundation stones for a slew of development works and promised funds to meet the other demands of the district.
His announcements include Rs. 10 crore as part of special economic package for road repair. He laid the foundation stone for the construction of Morarji Desai English Medium Residential School at Kodlipet in Somwarpet taluk at a cost of Rs. 4.82 crore. It was expected to come up on a 25.26 acre of land.
Grants of Rs. 5 crore each would be provided to Somwarpet and Virajpet town panchayats to take up various works under the Chief Minister’s Small and Medium Towns Development Project (CMSMTDP). The Kushalnagar Town Panchayat would get Rs. 2 crore under the scheme.
Madikeri City Municipal Council will get Rs. 3 crore under the CMSMTDP. Mr. Yeddyurappa laid foundation for the construction of schools and staff quarters at the Morarji Desai Residential School at Basavanahalli, near Kushalnagar. This would cost Rs. 2.5 crore. The announcements made by the Chief Minister include Rs. 2 crore for an Industrial Training Institute in Virajpet, Rs. 1.95 crore each for a post-matric hostel for boys under the Social Welfare Department and the Suvarna Samsritika Samuchaya, Rs. 1.45 crore for the construction of Kodava Heritage Centre, Rs. 1.5 crore for the development of 28 identified roads in the district under the PWD during 2010-11 and Rs. 1 crore as the initial contribution for the construction of the zilla pancyhayat building here. The other announcements are Rs. 95 lakh for the development of the Betri-Hemmadu-Parane road in Virajpet taluk, Rs. 90 lakh for the development of Kikkarahalli-Kudigana road in Somwarpet taluk, Rs. 60 lakh for the construction of pre-matric girls hostel at Polibetta in Virajpet taluk and Rs. 26.25 lakh for the construction of anganawadis at select locations in the district. Mr. Yeddyurappa also promised Rs. 1 crore for building the General K.S. Thimayya Memorial in the city. This grant, earmarked in budgetary allocations a couple of years ago, had not come through yet. The Chief Minister promised grants to set up an ICU at the District Hospital here and for the construction of a bridge. The bridge would facilitate shifting of patients and movement of people from the District Hospital to the Women and Children wing located across the road.
A Gandhi Memorial would be built near the Gandhi statue here. The ashes of Mahatma Gandhi are kept in the District Treasury.
For laying a synthetic hockey playing surface, estimated to cost Rs. 5 crore, at Ponnampet in Kodagu, the Chief Minister said he would consider granting funds.
