72.62 per cent turnout in Goa municipal polls

PANAJI: The turnout for the polls to 11 municipal councils in Goa was 72.62 per cent, State election officials disclosed on Sunday.
The election on Sunday was largely peaceful, except for the arrest of a person for alleged violence at Vasco-da-Gama in south Goa.
The Pernem Municipal Council of north Goa’s Pernem border taluk recorded the highest voting percentage of 88 while the lowest turnout of 57.76 per cent was recorded at Margao Municipal Council of south Goa, which is part of the Margao Assembly constituency represented by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat.
Counting will take place in the respective taluks on Monday and results are expected by afternoon.
In all, 585 candidates are contesting.
