Paravur to have women chairperson this time
Two independents file papers for Corporation
KOCHI: Eighty nominations were received in the district on Tuesday taking the total number of nominations in the first two days to 115 in the ensuing elections to the local bodies.
Candidates contesting for elections to the district panchayat, municipalities, grama panchayats, Kochi Corporation, and two block panchayat filed the nomination on the second day.
Two independent candidates contesting elections to the Corporation filed the nominations. Incidentally, these were the first nominations by any candidate contesting to the Corporation.
Nine candidates filed nominations in Angamaly, Kalamassery, Kothamangalam, and Muvattupuzha municipalities.
Paravur municipality will be the only one among the 11 municipalities in the district that will have a woman chairperson after the elections. Compared to this, outgoing chairpersons of seven out of the eight municipalities were women. (Three new municipalities have come into existence since the last elections). Subsequently, the post of chairpersons in these municipalities were exempted from women reservation this time around.
As newly formed municipalities, Thrikkakara, Eloor, and Maradu were also exempted from draw of lot for reservation. Naturally, Paravur municipality, which was in the general category and hence was headed by a male, will have a women chairperson this time.
Similarly, Kochi Corporation was one of the two corporations, the other being Thrissur, to have a woman Mayor.
Hence both the corporations will be de-reserved and would be included in the general category. Thus Paravur will be the only municipality with a woman head for the next five years.
Unless, the winning parties or fronts select a woman as their leader in other municipalities, Ernakulam will become the district with only one woman municipal head.
