With festivals nearing, AMC still in deep slumber
ALLAHABAD: Even as series of festivals including Dussehra, Durga Puja, Diwali are lined up in the coming months but Allahabad Municipal Corporation has failed to take steps for the repair of roads which continue to be in dilapidated condition. The commuters have to face problems while finding their way through roads full of potholes.
The roads are in deplorable condition for past many months. The ongoing work of laying sewage pipelines underneath different roads under the JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission) have further deteriorated the condition of roads. Even the roads on which the sewage pipelines have already been laid down continue to be in deplorable state. Though the excavated Earth has been put after laying of the pipelines but road repair has not been started yet.
The existing dilapidated condition of the numerous roads within the municipal limits reveals the true picture of the laid back attitude of AMC officials.
Further, continuous downpour of water during the month of August has further eroded the roads of the city. As most of the city roads do not have the drains on both side, water continues to accumulate on the roadsides and continuously erode it.
Pointedly, it is the responsibility of AMC to undertake road repair before the commencement of festivals but the agency has not yet started the process of repair of the roads.
The areas where the roads have not been repaired include Chowk, Nakhas Kohna, Katra, Moerabad, Mumfordganj, Rajapur, Civil Lines, Leader Road, Garhi Sarai, Khuldabad, Dariyabad, Kareli, Ghaus Nagar, Shams nagar, Lukerganj, Attarsuiya and other areas.
Even the corporators have expressed concern over the neglect of the roads and have urged the municipal commissioner to expedite officials concerned relating to the repair of roads.
Corporator from Badhshahi Mandi Kusum Lata Gupta says that there are numerous roads in her ward from which Dussehra procession pass but Allahabad Municipal Corporation has not started the work of repair of the roads. As a result, it will not be possible to take tableaux on roads full of potholes. Similarly, Prahlad Chandra Gupta, former corporator has also castigated AMC authorities for worsening condition of the roads in Meerganj, Bharti Bhawan and Lok Nath area.
Lamenting on the poor condition of the roads, Amit Saraswat, resident of South Malaka said that despite repeated complaints to the AMC authorities, the roads of his area have not been repaired.
However, municipal commissioner Ashok Kumar says efforts will be taken to start the road repair work in city so that commuters do not face any problem.
