‘Major Works Committee has a huge task’
H Ravindra, Chairman of the Standing Committee for Major Works, assures that he will be able to deliver and do justice to the priorities of the city. As one of the more important committees, Ravindra will head the responsibility of the controversial road widening project, stormwater drain (SWD), lakes, major works and others.
“We have a huge task ahead of us”, he conceded and added that their first step would be to review all the functions of the committee and the departments. He said he had already met heads of many departments and sought information on various issues. He added that he would use the information to improve the functioning of the departments under his leadership.
“Traffic is one of the biggest problems”, he said and added that the construction of railway underbridges and other underpasses/flyovers would be assessed. Commenting on the varied responses on the issue of road widening, Ravindra said: “I will bring all the concerned parties together on one forum to ensure that there is consensus on the issue and no confusion that prevailed earlier.”
“It is a big challenge for us”, he confessed and added that they would first see where widening would be necessary in the city. He said proper surveys would be done and road widening would be taken up only in places where it is deemed necessary. “We shall first spend time with the officials to establish the places where works needs to be taken up and then take further action”, he said.
