Council polls: LDF names candidates for 71 seats

Gearing up for polls:Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan inaugurating a public rally at the Muthalakulam Maidan in the city on Sunday.
Kozhikode: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has officially announced the list of candidates for 71 of the 75 seats for the City Corporation Council polls.
The candidates were announced at a public rally inaugurated by Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan at the Muthalakulam Maidan here on Sunday.
Sitting and former councillors, local party leaders, youths, teachers, advocates, grama panchayat members and prominent women figure in the list.
The announcement of candidates for Vellimadukunnu and Kuttichira, both general wards, Paroppady, which is reserved for women, and Nallalam, reserved for women from the Scheduled Castes, has been deferred.
As per a pact reached among the LDF constituents, the Communist Party of India(Marxist) will contest 61 seats; the Communist Party of India (CPI), six; the Nationalist Congress Party, four; the Janata Dal (Secular), three, including an Independent; and the Indian National League-Secular, one.
Deputy Mayor P.T. Abdul Latheef has been nominated to contest from the prestigious Malaparamba ward, while sitting councillor P.K. Nazar of the CPI will contest from Panniyakara. K.V. Baburaj, now representing the Thoppayil ward, has been retained in the list, but he will be fielded from Edakkad.
Women candidates
The prominent women nominated are C.K. Renuka Devi (Chakkorathukulam), A.K. Premajam (Pottamal) and Salma Rehman (Arekkad North). Ms. Devi is contesting for the third time, Ms. Premajam is a former Mayor and Salma Rehman is a former block panchayat president.
Sitting councillor M. Sreeja has been nominated to contest from the Athanikkal ward.
The post of Mayor has been reserved for women.
Hansa Jayant of the Janata Dal (Secular), chairman of the Standing Committee on Public Works, has been given the ticket to contest from Moonalingal, while Anita Rajan of the NCP will contest from Kottooli. Sitting councillor A.M. Mariam of the Indian National League-Secular will contest from Mukhadhar.
District panchayat members T. Moideen Koya and M. Radhakrishnan will be fielded from Cheruvannur West and Puthoor wards, respectively.
K.V. Mohandas, Elathur grama panchayat president, and K. Krishnan, member of Elathur grama panchayat, will contest from Puthiyappa and Elathur wards.
Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) district-level leader O.M. Bharadwaj will contest from the Thiruthiyad ward that has been reserved for members belonging to the Scheduled Castes. DYFI district committee members C.M. Jamsheer and C.P. Musafir will be fielded from Chelavoor and Payyanakkal wards, respectively.
The former councillor M.P. Hameed from Moozhikkal, T. Sujan from Thoppayil, M.P. Suryanarayanan of the NCP from East Hill, CPI(M) area sectary M. Mohanan from Medical College, area committee member O. Sadasivan from Thadambattuthazham and P. Sudheer from Karuvassery are the other important candidates in the list.
Thirty-nine wards have been reserved, including 36 for women and two for women belonging to the Scheduled Castes.
