Bangalore: Finally, it seems that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Council will form the remaining 11 Standing Committees.
Mayor S.K. Nataraj told The Hindu elections have been scheduled on October 30.
The BBMP council secretary will despatch the notice to the 198 councillors on Saturday, Friday being a government holiday on account of Valmiki Jayanti.
The Mayor said the term of the standing committees was not yet decided. “We are discussing it with legal experts,” he said.
He added that if it is for six months, the first-time councillors will be made chairpersons. Senior councillors will get to be chairpersons if the term is one year.
However, the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act 1976 states the term as one year from the date of its constitution. This means that the 11 chairpersons and members for the committees will hold office till next October 30.
Currently, only the Standing Committee on Taxation and Finance is in place.
The 11 other committees that will be formed include Public Health, Town Planning, Major Public Works, Ward-level Public Works, Accounts, Education, Social Justice, Appeals, Horticulture, Markets and Administrative Reforms.
