A first in India: Chennai Corporation launches drone mapping of properties

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation
on Tuesday became the first municipal body in the country to commission
drone mapping of properties and utilities, with the project being
inaugurated by Tamil Nadu municipal administration minister S P Velumani.
Hyderabad-based RSI Softech India Pvt Ltd will execute the mapping project.
Two hexacopters, each costing nearly Rs 21 lakh, will be used for the
project while two quadcopters will be kept on standby. The project will
cost the corporation Rs 6.43 crore and the city’s 426 sq.km area will be
covered in 120 days.
The drones, which will be fitted with high resolution camera, will
capture five images in one second. The images will be superimposed on
each other at a 60 degree angle and then processed to generate a 3D map
of the city.
Velumani said the corporation had to obtain the consent of the
Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the ministry of home and
defence, Intelligence Bureau, the district administrations of Chennai,
Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur and the Chennai city police.

Actually such a good project should have been launched by the likes of Gangai Amaran in Paiyanoor along the ECR.
Drainage Board (TWAD). The images captured by the drone will have to be
processed by the ministry of defence before being made available for the
corporation. Until the data is verified by the defence ministry, it
will be stored at a secure site in Ripon Buildings under the supervision
of an official in the rank of executive engineer.
“The mapping will facilitate planning of development work for the city on a priority basis,” Velumani said.
